Where Did Our Love Go by The Supremes from Motown 1's
“Where Did Our Love Go” by The Supremes
If it were up to me, Motown compilations would arrive in the mail for free like pizza delivery coupons and little boxes of laundry detergent. This music is far and away more important than The Beatles and more fun than you’re likely to have with your pants on. Motown’s studio band, The Funk Brothers, took everything they knew from a rich Gospel tradition—not to mention a few too many nights playing for strip clubs—and geared it towards secular Pop music more perfect than anything put to vinyl before or since, and if this doesn’t do anything for you then we have nothing in common. Ladies and gentlemen, here’s The Supremes.

Diana Ross & The Supremes “Then” (From The LP Reflections, 1968)
Possibly the one of the two standout non single tracks from The Supremes first post-Florence LP was this Smokey Robinson number. As was to be a rarity, it actually features the background work of Mary Wilson and Cindy Birdsong.
One of the biggest debates about The Supremes is around wondering if fans noticed the difference in sound after singles Diana recorded with her group mates stopped being released. The Andantes, who handled all post “Reflections” singles were often mixed further down in the mix in comparison to their work behind The Four Tops, where they harmonized with that group.
The effect of mixing The Andantes further down in the mix rendered them colorless, bland, if pretty (similar effects were done on Vandellas and Marvelettes output they recorded). To ears, you can really tell the difference when the actual group members appear on the record, as in this case.

No I can’t bear to live my life alone
I grow impatient for a love to call my own
But when I feel that I, I can’t go on
These precious words keep me hangin’ on
